What’s the difference between a dental crown and a dental bridge?

While a dental crown covers or ‘crowns’ an existing tooth for better protection, a dental bridge spans or ‘bridges’ a missing tooth gap. The latter can be carried out on one or more adjacent teeth that are missing, whereas a dental crown is a straight one-for-one type of replacement or cover.

A dental crown is suitable for situations where the tooth has been badly damaged by trauma or decay, has already been extensively restored, or has undergone a root canal treatment.

On the contrary, when you have one or more adjacent missing teeth, a dental bridge can be secured to the closest remaining natural teeth using a framework. Then, suspended from this framework is the false single tooth or teeth which span the missing gap to complete the smile.

The preparation

As with both a dental crown and a dental bridge, the tooth or teeth need to be prepared. This usually involves reducing the size of the affected tooth or (in the case of a dental bridge) anchor teeth, so that the bridge or crown fits into position.

The impression

Once the tooth or teeth have been prepared an impression is then taken. This is to ensure that the crown or bridge fits snugly in the mouth. The impression is then sent to the dental lab to reproduce your crown or bridge.
The temporary smile
Also, during the first visit, our Lyndarum dentist will fit you with one or more temporary crowns to preserve both form and function while awaiting your permanent set. Once that’s in place, you’re free to go.
The permanent smile
When your dental crown or bridge is received back from the laboratory (usually 2-3 weeks) a second appointment will be scheduled. Your temporary crowns are removed during this visit and your permanent versions are fitted/placed. All that’s left for you to do is to enjoy your newly restored smile!
