Dental Implants – What are they and how do they work?

A dental implant is effectively a screw-like rod normally made from titanium that is fitted with a lifelike crown. Unlike other forms of missing tooth replacement like dentures and bridges which can easily be removed, dental implants are designed to fix permanently into the jawbone.

Overtime, the bone tissue fuses with the titanium implant to form a super-strong platform. When this occurs a dental crown can be attached, Once the process is complete, dental implants provide a permanently fixed, hassle-free solution to tooth loss replacement – and one that can last for many years.

The multi-functional excellence of dental implants

Patients should know that although dental implants are perfect for replacing a single missing tooth on a one-for-one basis, they’re also ideal for replacing several teeth or even entire rows of teeth. As such, they make an attractive and practical alternative to conventional bridges and dentures.

Dental implant procedure at our Epping dental surgery – How the process works

You may have heard many stories about the dental implant process being a long and painful journey, but this is far from the truth. On the contrary, If you are strongly considering dental implants, patients should know that the procedure itself is no worse than having a tooth removed and because you are under sedation, you shouldn’t feel any major discomfort. Here’s how the process works…

The consultation

Your first dental practice visit will be a consultation. This is where our team will look to see if you’re a good candidate for dental implants. From there, our dentists will map out a treatment plan complete with costs involved. In some cases, patients will need a bone graft procedure first, to ensure adequate bone is present to attach the dental implant into. This is usually carried out several months prior to fitting the implant itself.

The surgery

Once everything is in place and you’re good to go, the next step is the implantation process itself. After sedation, our highly skilled dentist will drill a small hole through into the jawbone and insert the implant with the utmost precision and care. The titanium implant is then covered up and left to heal.
The abutment
Sometime later – usually after several months – the bone tissue should have fused with the dental implant. Now it’s time to fit the abutment. This acts as both a connector and shock-absorber between implant and artificial crown. During a quick procedure the fused implant is uncovered and the abutment is attached. Depending upon where in the mouth the dental implant is located, we may fit you with a temporary crown
The crown
Finally, after several more weeks your temporary crown is removed and replaced (if applicable) by a permanent crown.
All in all, that’s four visits over a period of 6 months or more, but the end result is a permanent lifelike tooth that will restore a great looking smile.
